17-year-old cheerleader dies after collapsing on high school track

A high school cheerleading captain in Georgia died after collapsing on a track during a dance team workout session, her devastated relatives and school officials said  Elyse Purefoy, 17, died on the way to a hospital Monday after passing out while running with other dance team members at Arabia Mountain High School in Lithonia Her father, Hank, believes extreme dehydration played a role in her death and several teammates said the teen asked her coach for water several times during the workout session, but was denied, WGCL reports  “She was a beautiful spirit,” an emotional Hank Purefoy told the station. “We’re going to miss her ”  Relatives said the teen who was set to begin her senior year arrived for dance team practice at the school at 7 a m. and ran several laps around the high school’s track before collapsing. Paramedics responded to the scene, but Purefoy died en route to a hospital, friends and relatives told the station  The teen — who boasted a 3.9 GPA — had undergone a physical prior to joining the dance team Her cause and manner of death remain under investigation, her father told WSB-TV  District officials confirmed Purefoy’s death in a statement to The Post.  “Our hearts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time,” the DeKalb County School District said  District officials declined to comment on claims by Purefoy’s teammates that she was denied water during Monday’s workout, saying no further information or comments were available as of Tuesday  Purefoy’s friends and relatives, meanwhile, gathered outside of the teen’s home late Monday in Stone Mountain, where she was remembered as a happy young woman whose life was cut short far too soon  “Just last night I was helping her, I was helping her practice her stands for dance,” sister Elona Purefoy told WGCL “Now she’s gone.”  But at least one of Purefoy’s friends said her request for water shouldn’t have been ignored  “I think schools need to take it more seriously when they’re hearing complaints from their participants,” Arianna Ameler told the station “I think a lot of it is overlooked as you being weak.”  Temperatures in the area were around 72 degrees at the time, according to the National Weather Service  A call seeking comment from the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office was not immediately returned early Tuesday  An online fundraiser set up in Purefoy’s memory has raised more than $4,500 as of Tuesday  “The doctors did their best to bring you back but your heart just stopping working,” the website reads “Elyse you are a beautiful spirit. And we will miss you so much … There are no words to describe the hurt and loss we feel ”
