Boiler Bytes: TeCH Camp

>>Nadine Mahasneh: Here at
the TECh Camp, the campers get to incorporate technology into their favorite
activity, cheerleading. Let’s Boiler Up for
this BoilerByte! [ Music ] [ Background music ]>>Nadine Mahasneh:
I’m with Christi Rose, former Purdue cheerleader
and founder of Technology Experiences
Cheerleading, also known as TECh Camp. Christi, what’s the
purpose of the Camp?>>Christi: The purpose of the
camp is to take middle school and high school girls and
[background sounds] show them that careers and opportunities
within majors that they have, while using a cheerleading
platform, to teach them all those amazing
opportunities that they have. They get to do everything as far
as activities in the classroom, typical camp activities,
such as, you know, movies and bowling,
and then also working with the Purdue cheerleaders. So they get to stunt with them
and they get to talk with them and ask them any
question they want, and work with the professors. So it’s a good mix of, you know, fun and educational
opportunities. [ Background music,
camp sounds ]>>Teacher: For Purdue,
this is one of our programs to help getting young women
in technology young women. It’s a problem all across
the country that young women, in particular, are not
choosing careers in technology. And we feel, because we’ve got
a really unique program here at the College of Technology,
where we can combine graphics and computer information
technology, and it’s very applied,
and it’s very hands-on, we want more young
women in our programs. What they’re doing in the class
today is they’re creating their Alice worlds, which is
basically their software with our cheerleaders. So they pick different
cheerleaders, they make a pyramid, and they
have to create at doing things, just like a regular
cheerleader would. Then later in the camp,
they’ll work with — the Purdue cheerleaders
will actually come and do the cheer
that they created.>>Student: It’s all fun, ’cause
I’m a cheerleader at home, so it’s fun to come here
and see how things are done on the other side
of the country. And the technology part’s fun,
because I’m growing up and, you know, like, in a generation
where technology’s huge and I’m so involved in it. So it’s nice to kind of learn
exactly what I’m dealing with, instead of just seeing
it on the screen.>>Christi: Cheerleading
is a really hands-on sport, so I think the best way
to learn is by doing. And a lot of technology-related
careers are actually learn by doing things, also. So you get to work
with your hands, you get to move your
body and just have fun.>>Student: At this
camp, I’m learning more about just cheerleading. It’s about what I want
to do in my future and how I’m gonna do it. And this camp helps
me prepare for that.>>Student: I really liked it
here, because when I first came, I felt like we’re all family,
because we all were together. And they’re all nice to us. And it’s, like, cheerleading
camp and TECh Camp, it’s really fun. I love it.>>Christi: Another week
I’d really like to see all of the girls really interested in taking a step toward
becoming the best they can be, becoming the best cheerleader
they can be, getting involved in as much as they can. They want to go to colleges. They want to go someplace
like Purdue and cheer for their favorite school.>>Nadine Mahasneh: Here at the TECh Camp the girls
are learning and having fun. For BoilerBytes,
I’m Nadine Mahasneh. Hit it, girls!>>Cheerleaders: Boiler up
[clap, clap] for BoilerBytes! [clap, clap] Boiler up
[clap, clap] for BoilerBytes! [All cheering]
