at 105 pounds, with two wins, one loss, both wins by KO, the pride of Las Vegas,
Vicious Vaia Zaganas. Alright, getting ready here, Vaia Zaganas, a two and one, lost her pro
debut a four-round decision to Luz Rodriguez. She’s had two first-round
knockout since then. Dee Hamaguchi, a member of the US judo team for several
years, martial artist, 35 years old, a Yale graduate, Kevin.>>Can’t beat that>>and she teaches math at a high school in Harlem. She had a draw in her first fight with
Hector Rocha’s daughter, Gracie Roca, And then got stopped in the third round by Yolanda Gonzales, She gave up a lot of height and reach in that fight. She has a lot of trouble getting
fights at her size. She weighs only 103 pounds. You can see Zaganas
with a two-pound weight advantage. Dee Hamaguchi, 5 foot even. Zaganas 5′-1,”
reach advantage for Zaganas. Let’s see if she can use it. Dee is 36. They’ll
ring the bell again as we start. Remember, these are two minute rounds. And Zaganas comes out trying to start fast. Hamaguchi with a big right over the
top right away. Gets countered herself. Not a lot of feeling out here right now. Hamaguchi landing another good stiff
jab.>>Vaia, I see at the gym training. She spars with guys, and she is a little buzz saw. She just keep coming. She has 40
amateur fights. She’s from Canada. Hamaguchi, not a long amateur career. She trains out a Gleason’s Gym. Also spars with men, spars with women, Very tough for girls this size to find good sparring. Hamaguchi using the whole ring right
now. Goes downstairs to the body. Win, lose, or draw, Hamaguchi will be
happy to be in there with somebody close to her height and to her weight.
>>The thing about Vaia, Vaia knows how to come forward. I used to call her “Vaia on fire.” She is a buzz saw, she just keeps coming forward throwing shots. Every shot she throws… yeah, well, I actually showed her some things that she’s been working on. She trains at the college at UNLV with the college team. Chris, who’s her trainer, and Skipper Kelp, train the college guys. They have collegiate boxing.>>Skipper Kelp, right now the coach of the UNLV boxing. Under 30 seconds to go here in the first.
Again, two-minute rounds with women. Very even first round thus far. Now jabs
starting to land consistently, but not following up with the right. Zaganas, slowing down now near the end of the first round. Good first action round here. Body attack
by Hamaguchi. [bell rings] [cheers, applause] Stay with the jab.
And throw the right hook to the body. All night! Right? Move your head side to side. Stay focused. Watch me. Stay focused. Stay with the jab and throw the right hook to the body. Come back with the left hook. You gotta put some punches together. Ok? And try and parry the jab when she jabs. Parry it, throw the right hand. You could do that! You’s doing it all week. And be first! You’re doing good.
When you get inside, you gotta work the body. Bam, and put your hand up. Bam, and put it up. But you gotta be first now.>>”Seconds out!” [bell rings] Round number 2 of a four round scheduled girls’ fight. Dee Hamaguchi in black. Vaia Zaganas in sparkly shorts. Lennox Blackmoore looking for Hamaguchi to jab and right hook to the body, all day long. And she’s following instructions. And that body attack work doesn’t seem to bother Zaganas.>>The body shot can take your legs away. Guys hit pretty hard to the body. Take the punches and keep coming forward,>>Taking a hell of a body attack from Hamaguchi, manages to keep coming.>>… catch her right in the sternum, and knock the air out of her, Zaganas. Then Zaganas will slow down. But until that time happen, then Zaganas will be all over Hamaguchi.>>Not much on Zaganas’ jab, right there.>>Hamaguchi actually weighs a lot lighter than Zaganas, giving up a weight advantage.>>Two pounds.>>Yeah, but you know, Hamaguchi fights 103.>>You think Zaganas tries really hard to make 105?>>I don’t know, but probably she did. Take a look at her legs. Her legs are a lot thicker. …very strong on the inside. Looks like she’s getting fatigued. Nice combination by Hamaguchi! Catches Zaganas. Brings a smile to the face of Hamaguchi. I think she feels like she’s got something going here. She’s on the home court of Zaganas. [bell rings] [cheering, applause] This round, I want you boxing. That jab is all day long. Play with her, let her come into your shot. Play with it this round, box with it this round. Get hose angles going this round, and
then the fourth round, I want you to come on hard, ok? Box her this round, play that distance. Keep that jab. The jab is working beautiful. She falls into it every time. Straight shots.>>Take a look now, Hamaguchi, jab upstairs, right to the body. Came back upstairs with a right hand, Kevin. Showing some good poise. A pretty good second round.>> Hamaguchi seems like she closes her eyes, like right there.>>Bring that right up there, and then turn it over. C’mon! Be first!>>I like Dee. [bell rings] Second half the scheduled four rounder. Dee Hamaguchi in black. Vaia Zaganas in the silver. Nobody’s been down. And they’re looking for more jabs. Hamaguchi trying to take that plan away from her. She continues to work the body. As we mentioned, in a four round fight, very tough to take away the legs from a body attack. Hamaguchi getting tagged pretty good here at the beginning of the third round. Continues to try to work downstairs. But they don’t seem to be bring the hands down of Vaia Zaganas.>>Hamaguchi doesn’t really have anything to keep Vaia off. And I think that’s the problem. She doesn’t have nothing to keep her off her.>>”Hands up, Dee!”>>And going backwards. They’re like rock-em-sock-em robots, both girls.>>Good action throughout this fight, Really good fight. … using the jab and then go to the body. missed that right hand over the top. Hamaguchi also coming off a layoff. [bell rings] [applause, cheering] Drink this water. C’mon. Wake up, Dee! Wake up! Look, what round is this? OK then! So you know what you gotta do. Stay with the jab! When you get inside, you gotta work inside, and bring the uppercut right up. Bam, bam, bam. She’s right there!>>Look at that combination. Look at that! They’re rock-em-sock-em robots.>>Hamaguchi ate a big combination and she came back with a right hand lead. You gotta give both these girls credit. Very competitive fight.>>Ain’t no quit! …>>This is the last round, Vaia. Beautiful, c’mon! [bell rings] “Touch gloves”>>Fourth and final round. Hamaguchi in black, Zaganas in silver. Two minutes to go here. Zaganas comes out and rocks Hamaguchi back. Hamaguchi, though, no quit in her.>>Zaganas doesn’t move her head at all. That’s why Zaganas is taking shots. …Offense, offense, offense… Hamaguchi’s going backwards. I’ve got it 30-27.>>I gave Hamaguchi the second round. First round was close >>Hamaguchi’s got nothing to keep Zaganas off her.>>”Shoot the right hand there!” – Lennox Blackmoore “C’mon, Dee!”- Blimp Parsley>>”Throw the right hand behind the jab!” – Blackmoore>>Oh! Overhand right! Got the overhand right. There’s another one! There she goes again. Overhand right.>>Nice combination there. We got 45 seconds, or so, to go.>>”Right hand lead!” – Blackmoore>>”There you go! Do it again!”-Blimp>>There goes that overhand right again. Zaganas has a good overhand right. She throws it quick. She doesn’t come back with the left hook. He finishing skills are not that great, but>>”Good shot! Good shot! There you go!” – Ben>>There she goes again!>>Hamaguchi, though, dropping her hands, here, in the fourth round, Kevin. And she’s going for broke. And she’s getting tagged for that matter. As you said, Zaganas wasn’t moving her head. She got snapped back there.>>”Do it again!!’ -Blackmoore>>”Keep punching, Dee!” – Blimp>>Defense a bit [??] for Zaganas, but I
think she won. [bell rings] [applause, cheering]>>Really good fight! I’ve got it 39-37 three rounds to one for Zaganas. That last round was close, Kevin! And if you gave Hamaguchi that last round, I gave her the second, we could be looking at a draw, so.>>I thought Zaganas won the whole fight.>>I’ve got it 3 rounds to 1, Zaganas.>>A draw, though, Arnie? C’mon.>>I dont’ have it a draw, but I’m saying, if you gave that last round… Take a look at action. Hamaguchi just walking into that right hand lead. She continually dropped her left hand in the fourth round. That was the problem.>>She dropped both hands, Arnie. She had both hands by her waistside. And Zaganas kept getting hit with the counter shot cuz she had no defense. Zaganas, …. her offense as her defense. Roy Jones says that a good offense at the defense. I tell you, when people say that, you know what it means, Arnie? They don’t have defense.>>Well, there you go. But, if we can get his attention, I believe ring announcer Rch Langlois’ got the numbers. Now we’re gonna find out from him the official decision.>>The judge’s decision Judge Glenn Trowbridge scored it 40-36.
judge Al Lefkowitz judged it 40-36.
