Cheerleading Stunts & Jumps : How to Do Front Tuck in Cheerleading


I’m Mandy Butler on behalf of Expert Village
and we’re going to talk about tumble track warm ups today. Next, we’re going to do a
punch front. We’ve already done a forward roll. We’ve already done a dive roll, so the
next in the progression is the punch front or the front tuck. I’m going to use the same
approach you saw me do in the dive roll with a step, feet together approach. Now, it’s
very important in the punch front that right before you tuck in the air while you’re suspended,
you get that nice tight hollow position we mentioned in the backward straight jump earlier.
That’s going to be like this. Shoulders slightly forward, chest up, hips underneath you nice
and tight. Hollow body position. When I do punch front, I’m going to tuck my legs just
as I did in the tuck jump earlier. I’m going to wrap my hands in front of my knees just
like this. Again, you don’t want to bring your chest too far down to your knees, but
this is a front tuck rather than a backwards one. I am rotating forward, so it’s okay to
lean forward. Just do not drop your chest because that’s going to send you straight
into the mat and you’re not going to have the hang time necessary to complete the skill.
This is a punch front. Now, notice when I land it, I’m going to land it in a stuck position
rather than running forward. It’s very difficult to do that. A lot of people take a step. It’s
just very important that you understand with a blind landing, not to kick your legs out
because you could hyper-extend your knees. You’re going to try to keep your knees nice
and bent and land in a soft manner, rather than kicking out of it. This is the punch
front.

  4. if im fronting in a stunt group do I put my hands just below the flyers knees or on the bases hands to take pressure off. like I haven't cheered since I was 6 HELP.

  5. strawberriefilms— I'm sorry, but that is not a way to teach a front tuck. Ive don't gymnastics for 6 years, cheerleading for 4 and have coached for 4. You do not simply "run and put your arms up". That could cause a serious injury. Just pointing something out that could end up being harmful to someone who took your "advice". (:
