CSUF Men’s Basketball vs Long Beach State 2/13/19

The Cal State Fullerton Titans hosted the
Long Beach State 49ers in their last regular season matchup. The crowd would
be a big factor throughout the night as it was Fullerton’s orange out game the
story of the night would be junior guard Austen Awosika who proved to be a
handful for the 49ers defense he started the game off hot making his first two
three-pointers and finished the night with 17 points. He also contributed 6
rebounds and 4 assists including this one where he finds freshman Wayne Arnold
leaking out on the fast break. Arnold helped the Titans by coming off
the bench and scoring 10 points in the first half
along with Arnold there were four other Titans and double figures including
Jackson Rowe who posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Khalil Ahmad also added a game-high 19 points topping his season average of 18.2.
The game would come down to the wire as Fullerton had their lead cut to
three after Long Beach State’s Bryan Alberts hits the corner three to make
the score 83-80 two possessions later Fullerton’s lead would be cut to two
points after the 49ers get an easy layup making the score 84-82 the very next
play Khalil Ahmad would get trapped in the backcourt and would get called for
the travel with 8 seconds left with the 49ers able to tie or take the lead they
themselves traveled and gave the ball back to Fullerton. However the game was
not over yet down three with 3 seconds left and no timeouts Long Beach State would
try to take the ball the length of the floor tied the game but Austen
Awosika comes up with the game-winning steal helping the Titans win 85-82. I
thought this group battle through the adversity, battled through some of the
things that we were experiencing throughout the course of the game but
you know trying to be physical we’re trying to be aggressive is something
that we definitely want to do, and we just have to learn to be able to make
the adjustments based on the way that those three other guys are calling the
game. Honestly just my teammates trusting me I mean like you said when those guys
are struggling or the shots aren’t falling I feel like it’s up to me to
make plays or start scoring but I mean to come out I feel like I should
find those guys get them easier looks but tonight they were finding me.
Cal State Fullerton took the season sweep against rivals Long Beach State pushing
their record to 7-3 in conference play. The Titans were led by guard Austen
Awosika with 17 points, shooting an efficient 6-9 and 3-3 behind the
arc. The Titans were also helped with players
off the bench like freshman Wayne Arnold and sophomore Josh Pitts. The Titans look
to continue this hot streak going into Northridge on the road on Saturday
February 16th at 7 p.m. Reporting from Titan Gym, I’m Kush
Parikh, Titan Sports.
