Fumio Demura – Karate Master

Fumio Demura – Karate Master

The story of how Shihan Demura came to
be one of the most accomplished and respected martial artists of our time is
long and intricate. As a youth he studied kendo under the legendary Nakamura
Sensei and kendo and karate under Ryusho Sakagami at his dojo in Yokohama. An
avid student, Shihan Demura trained daily in the martial arts, achieving high
levels of proficiency at a young age. While training at Sakagami Sensei’s
Itosu-Kai dojo, he was introduced to the Okinawan Kobudo teacher Shinken Taira, and soon became knowledgeable in various weapons, an ability he would become
famous for after his move to America. Okinawan weapons expert. All Japan Karate champion. Fifth degree black belt in karate. Fumio
Demura. My name is Fumio Demura. I come from Yokohama Japan. This is called sai. It’s used against a sword and Okinawan people they don’t have any weapon against
the samurai sword This is like an extension of my hand. If you want to block, you can block If you want to strike, it gives you more extension. You have to practice every day to give you coordination like that. The nunchaku once used to thresh wheat
can be twirled with enough power and speed to generate 1600 pounds of
pressure at point of impact. The human skull cracks at eight and a half pounds. That’s a pretty dangerous weapon. In 1961 Shihan Demura won the National
kumite title of Japan. He was now teaching karate in Tokyo but
had the desire to come to the United States. This opportunity presented itself
in 1963 when the American karate pioneered Dan Ivan was in Japan looking
for a talented instructor to assist him with his dojo in Southern California. In
1965 Shihan Demura moved to the United States where he’s generally considered
the first to teach authentic Shito-Ryu karate and Okinawan Kobudo there. In Karate, we say there is no first strike. Always the first move is defensive. This
is a credo of a true Karate-ka, the devotee of Karate. The knowledge that you have
the ability to overcome an assailant will give you the confidence to rise above
petty insults and walked away from trouble with dignity. Fumio Demura
is an instructor and is currently called Sensei Demura. The techniques he would
demonstrate here are as difficult to master as they are powerful. In 1969 Shihan Demura was awarded the prestigious black
belt Hall of Fame Award for karate Sensei of the Year and in 1975 he was
named Martial Artist of the Year. During the 1970’s and 80’s he authored several
books on karate and Kobudo and has been featured in numerous martial arts
publications. Shihan Demura quickly became a prominent
figure in the American karate world through his teachings and his highly
skillful in entertaining demonstrations. In the 1980’s Shihan Demura became
involved in the Karate Kid movies, serving as stunt double to actor Pat
Morita. You see his face? See the trail? I think he peed in his pants! Well well well, look who’s here, the big
war hero. What are you waiting for? Party time. We’re old friends. Come on, little man. let’s see how good you really
are. The popularity of the films contributed
to increased interest in the martial arts among youth. This was followed by
several other appearances and featured films including Mortal Kombat and Rising
Sun. Keep eye contact at all times and at all
costs, don’t lose your temper. I don’t lose my temper. How you guys doing? How you doing? Step aside, and we’ll have no trouble. This is police business. Today, Shihan Demura serves as
director and chief instructor for the Japan Karate Itosu-Kai International, an
organization encompassing nearly 20 nations and thousands of members. Each
February he hosts his annual goodwill Championships in Costa Mesa, considered
by many to be foremost traditional tournament in Southern California. A lot of people never take Karate, or any martial art. Alot of people are against it. “That’s too dangerous, that’s no good for my son, too violent.” Because they
don’t understand it. But if you practice so many years you know it’s
good for every human being because I know because I go through myself.
I’m much more humble and I can cooperate with anybody. I can work anything
and I believe in myself that way so I have no problem with anybody anywhere
anything I do. That’s why I learn so if you look at it this way,
my dream is that everybody in this country I would like to try learn martial arts. Shihan Demura is an authentic karate
sensei. Combining the traditions of the past with modern approaches to training,
he is regarded by his students with love, trust in admiration in his personal life
as well as within the walls of the dojo, Shihan is a living model of what all
true martial artists strive to be.

  1. Too bad whoever made the video had to be rude and put the hourific/title "shihan" before Demura Shihan's name. 🙁

  2. he may be a round one, but he can still kick quite flexibly, and maintain height after throw. which itself is an amazing feat.

  3. I met Demura-sensei in about 1984 or 1985.   I had one of the books he'd written and he autographed it for me.

  4. I remember seeing a picture of Fumio Demura on the cover of Black Belt Magazine in the early 1960's. He was holding two sais. I still have thzt magazine.

  5. Eu não conhecia esse incrível mestre de karate-Do, o verdadeiro mestre Myagi, até o Bruce Lee treinou com ele. Tem até um documentario sobre a história dele no Netflix

  6. I STUDIED WITH HIM IN SANTA ANA! AS A SENSEI HE'S TOUGH BUT GREAT, i LEARNED SO MUCH! I'VE HAD SO MANY "BRUTAL" WORKOUTS DOING Shitō-ryū (糸東流) IT'S SO COOL…, AND…, FIERCE! YOU CAN DO SO MUCH WITH IT, REMINDS ME OF Jeet Kune Do ! LEARN IT WELL, PRACTICE LIKE HELL, THEN START TO EXPAND IT USING VARIOUS OTHER PARTS OF DIFFERENT STYLES! YOU WOULDN'T BELIEVE SOME OF THE STORIES OF SOME OF MY WORKOUTS! INTENSE WOULD BE SUCH AN UNDERSTATEMENT!! A FRIEND AND I USED TO ROCK CLIMB AND WORKOUT TOGETHER! WE WOULD ROLL INTO ANY CITY USA AND PICK BUILDINGS TO CLIMB FOR PRACTICE! A MIX BETWEEN SPIDERMAN, A NINJA AND ETHAN HUNT!! THOSE WERE THE DAYS MY FRIEND!
RIP BRUCE LEE "I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times."
