Hi! My name is Brooke. I thought I had found the best friends ever
until they dumped me/ dumped my ass for a crazy and stupid reason. After long time hanging out together, it turned
out that our friendship was nothing but toxic and vain. When I was a child, my family had a standard
economic status. We weren’t poor, we weren’t wealthy either. Both of my parents worked hard to provide
my brother and I a good life. They didn’t have much time to deal with
school stuffs; you know, parents meetings, annual events, children silly fights, and
so on… We didn’t go to an elementary school. That’s why my parents hired a tutor, and
we were homeschooled in our early years. At my last year of elementary studies, my
dad got a great promotion and became manager. With this promotion came an enormous increase
of salary. Like huge. Now, we would have more than enough money
for my mom to take less work and pay more attention to schooling affairs. We also needed friends, so my parents decided
that it was time to enroll us in an actual school next year. I was craving to go. I thought it was the perfect timing! I wouldn’t be the “new girl” ‘cause
I would enter as a freshman. Every freshman is basically new at high school. Still, I had a hard time finding friends my
first year. I wasn’t used to school. I talked and had lunch with some people, but
we weren’t really friends. We were “acquaintances”, which is a weird
word to call 14 year-old kids. We barely had stuff in common. Nonetheless, it was an ok year; at least it
didn’t suck. Such a gold standard! I made it my life purpose to find friends
next year. I joined some school’s clubs. I entered the debate club. I was flexible and quite good at dancing from
all those years of practice with Just Dance. so I thought of cheerleading. This was completely new for me. I had never tried the sport, but I gave it
a shot and loved it. Being a cheerleader changed my whole school
life. I became friends with popular girls. Betty, Bianca and Brenda and I turned into
the best friends. We hanged out together all the time and told
each other everything. We were known at school as “the four Bees”,
since our names all started with the letter B…and people thought we could sting them. I hate to admit this but we were pretty alike
to the girls of the movie “Mean girls”. We even wore pink on Wednesday! No, I’m just kidding! But we almost reached to that point! Brenda proposed yellow. Our relationship followed basic rules as any
other friendship, like no dating a friend’s ex. Yet there were others. The most important rule of them all was “to
not outshine each other”. I know you should think “what kind of friendship
is this?!”. And I know it’s a bit excessive, but for
me our friendship worked, and I loved those girls. We were like sisters…until September 6th,
the day after my birthday, when our friendship ended. My birthday was very special. People at school gave me letters, candies,
and decorated a classroom just for me. Later, I got home, and my mom cooked an amazing
dinner. After they sang me “Happy Birthday”, my
parents gave me the newest IPhone as a present. I was so excited! It feels like the best phone on Earth! I celebrated it only with my family ‘cause
it was a Thursday. I was still going to throw a party with my
friends the next day. On Friday, I arrived to school and immediately
went to my friends to plan the party. When they saw my new phone, they all rolled
their eyes at me. “How could you do this to us?”, Bianca
said. “Who on Earth do you think you are?”,
added Brenda. I didn’t understand. It was just a phone, and I wasn’t even showing
off! I explained that to them my parents just gave
to me. Their attitude was pure nonsense. They told me that they weren’t my friends
anymore because I wanted to “outshine them” supposedly. BECAUSE OF A FREAKING PHONE! According to them, I broke our most important
rule. It has been a week since then, and I can’t
believe they made me feel guilty for it. I don’t know what to do! These past days have been horrible. I know they talked badly behind my back. I had barely talked to people. Most avoid me since I’m no longer part of
the popular group. I kept going over and over this for days. First I thought maybe I should sell my IPhone
to recover our friendship. I mean, when you put it into a scale a friendship
is more valuable than a phone. But what kind of friendship are we talking
about here? “Were they my true friends?”, I asked
myself. And the answer is no. Definitely no. Even though we had amazing times together,
I just realize they were never true friends either. We were just a socially designed backup. Friendship is about real support, not superficial. I will end high school without them by my
side, and I hope to find some good friends in the time I have left at school. If not, I’ll find them in college. Either way, I will survive.
