Lenora Kinzie – Being a Cheerleader

[Music Playing] my top effective practice in Health
Sciences Librarianship is being a cheerleader it pushes me to be out in
front of people it makes me appreciate the importance of a team the value of a
team and the last thing is it says you’re a leader cheerleaders are always
out there leading chants and drills as I look back at my profession it was
probably one of the worst of times which ended up being what has motivated me and
made me probably a better librarian was in the 2007 many hospitals were shutting
doors many hospitals were saying you’ve got to cut budgets to survive and I
understood that I knew the patient came first and to succeed and to be here in
the future we had to think of that patient first but they pointed at me in
the library and said you’ve got to make some cuts and I cut staff and I cut
budget and that was hard enough because I knew it impacted the staff’s lives but
I also it it was to me just a watershed moment this because I had given twenty
years of my life to this profession and believed in it, and it was like wow maybe it
has no value so it took a little while but I decided that I can move this
forward and we could be successful again so looked at efficiency looked at being
a cheerleader if there was a chance to talk about the library I was there
orientation committees anything like that I’ve gotten involved in many many
teams IRB magnet evidence-based practice many times patient care people as
part of the team say this is a great idea but we can’t make it work so I’ve
learned that sometimes you have to go outside the library and it’s still part
of the cause we’re still working to make patient care better I was recently asked
to be the liaison for the mayo clinic network program that just is brand new
at Stormont Vail I think this came because of the efforts at promoting
pushing the library being out there being able to work with teams so I’m
very proud of that as well to be asked on that so my final thoughts on being a
cheerleader is to be part of that team be out there cheerleading for yourself
it’s sometimes awkward to say hey look at me we’re
doing something good but boy if it’s a chance to put it in a hospital
newsletter or make it available I’m doing it little uncomfortable but I
believe you have to do that definitely cheer for the other members
of the team and our institution when they accomplished something I celebrate
that with them I want to suggest to you that even though you’re comfortable
think things are going very well we need we just cannot lose the game because
times can get tough and things can change just in a heartbeat so be out
there be successful S U C C E S S yay [music playing] If you’re like me and you’re somewhat shy
Having a business card is like an introduction it really works well for me I can say,
Oh, hi I’m your librarian Give them the card and then they can say Oh
and then usually they have a question or something and I can answer them
