NBA Cheerleaders Sue Team For Wage Abuse

NBA Cheerleaders Sue Team For Wage Abuse

ONE NBA TEAM IS GETTING SUED BECAUSE
OF THE WAY THEY ARE TREATING THEIR CHEERLEADERS. IT TURNS OUT THAT THIS LAWSUIT, IT IS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT, IS
CLAIMING PROLIFIC WAGE ABUSE AGAINST CHEERLEADERS, AND IT
SPECIFICALLY TARGETS THE MILWAUKEE BUCKS. ACCORDING TO
THINK PROGRESS, WHICH LOOKED INTO THIS ISSUE, THEY FOUND THAT
THE LAWSUIT MENTIONS JUST HOW LITTLE THESE
CHEERLEADERS GET PAID, AND JUST HOW MUCH THEY WORK. I ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT THESE CHEERLEADERS
DID SOME TRAINING AND THEN SHOWED UP TO THE GAMES, AND THAT WAS IT, BUT NO, IT IS INCREDIBLE HOW
MUCH WORK THEY ARE DOING. IT IS LIKE A DANCE COMPANY. THE LAWSUIT SAYS THEY WERE
PAID RATES THAT AMOUNTED TO $3.50, AND $4.50 AN HOUR, AND
THAT THEY WEREN’T PAID TIME AND A HALF IN OVERTIME IF THEY WORKED
MORE THAN FORTY HOURS A WEEK. WISCONSIN’S MINIMUM WAGE
IS THE SAME AS THE FEDERAL LEVEL OF $7.25 AN HOUR. THE LAWSUIT
SAYS THAT THE MILWAUKEE BUCKS PAID THIRTY-THREE
DOLLARS PER PRACTICE, SIXTY-FIVE DOLLARS PER HOME GAME, AND FIFTY
DOLLARS FOR EACH SPECIAL APPEARANCE, SUCH AS CHARITY EVENTS. PRACTICES AND WORKOUT SESSIONS
COME TO TWENTY OR THIRTY HOURS A WEEK, AND THEY’RE
SUPPOSED TO ARRIVE TWO HOURS BEFORE THE START OF EACH GAME,
FOR WHICH THEY DON’T GET PAID. THEY ARE ALSO RESPONSIBLE
FOR VERY STRICT WEIGHT STANDARDS, AND THEY HAVE TO GET
THEIR HAIR AND MAKEUP DONE AT THEIR OWN COST. THE TEAM DOES NOT PAY
FOR THAT EITHER. THAT IS WHAT IS HAPPENING
RIGHT NOW. ALL THEY WANT IS A FAIR
WAGE FOR THEIR WORK. THIS IS SOMETHING THAT THEY
REALLY DEDICATE THEMSELVES TO. CHEERLEADERS, IT’S SO STUPID,
THE FACT THAT WE STILL HAVE CHEERLEADERS. IT SEEMS
RIDICULOUS. THEY DO A LOT, AND THEY ARE REALLY GOOD. ALMOST EVERY GAME YOU GO TO NOW ñ IT’S
ANOTHER REASON I LOVE BASEBALL, THERE ARE NO CHEERLEADERS ñ
IN BASKETBALL NOW, ALMOST EVERY BREAK THEY DO A ROUTINE.
THEY DO A LOT, THEY HAVE TO CHANGE OUTFITS. THEY ALL LOOK GREAT
BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO MEET THESE STANDARDS, AND THEY ARE ABLE TO
MEET THOSE STANDARDS AND GET PAST THAT BECAUSE IT IS
ESSENTIALLY, IT’S LIKE YOU ARE GETTING CAST IN A SHOW.
IT’S NOT LIKE A REAL JOB. THAT SAID,
IF YOU ARE CAST IN A SHOW YOU HAVE TO MEET CERTAIN STANDARDS.
AT THE BARE MINIMUM, GIVE THEM MORE MONEY, TRIPLE EVERYTHING
AND YOU ARE STILL NOT GIVING THEM ENOUGH. WHAT THE TEAM IS DOING, IS
THEY ARE CIRCUMVENTING LAWS. MINIMUM WAGE LAWS. THEY ARE DOING THIS BY PAYING
THEM A FLAT RATE FOR APPEARANCES, AND THAT IS NOT OKAY. THEY ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO PAY
THESE CHEERLEADERS MORE. AT THE VERY LEAST THEY HAVE TO
GET PAID MINIMUM WAGE, AND I WANT THEM TO MAKE MORE. JUST TO GIVE YOU SOME MORE
CONTEXT, THE MILWAUKEE BUCKS IS NOT THE ONLY TEAM
THAT IS FACING A LAWSUIT. OTHER TEAMS HAVE FACED A
LAWSUIT IN THE PAST, AND THE CHEERLEADERS HAVE WON THOSE
LAWSUITS BECAUSE IT IS CLEAR THAT THEY ARE NOT
GETTING PAID ENOUGH. I LIKE THAT THEY ARE FIGHTING
BACK, AND AGAIN, THIS IS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT, SO IT WILL
IMPACT PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE CHEERLEADERS WHO DECIDE
THEY WANT TO DO THIS. THE MILWAUKEE BUCKS ARE THE
LOWEST VALUED NBA TEAM IN THE LEAGUE. THEIR VALUATION, ACCORDING TO
FORBES, AT THE BEGINNING OF THIS YEAR IS ONLY $600 MILLION. $600 MILLION? THEY’VE GOT A LOT OF
OPERATING EXPENSES. THEY PAY THEIR PLAYERS A LOT OF MONEY,
BUT THEY CAN STAND TO THROW A COUPLE EXTRA HUNDRED THOUSAND
DOLLARS A YEAR AT THE CHEERLEADERS, THEY ARE GOING TO BE OKAY. IT’S THE RIGHT THING
TO DO. YOU CANNOT GO TO A MILWAUKEE BUCKS GAME WITHOUT THE
BUCK GIRLS.

  1. Missing some numbers here.
$65 per Home game is way beyond $4.5/h (14h) even if you add 2h for arrival, it's more like $13/h. Special appearances are probably shorter, but let's assume not, then they clock in at $10/h.
There's no info about the number and length of practice sessions, so I assume something like 5h for 4-6 days wich seems exesive, but would reach 20-30h.This way they would be paid $6/h for training. But even if that's the case, combined with the higher game-rates and special-appearances the difference to the required $7.25 would be minimal; something they could easily renegotiate out of court.
If they really get paid almost $3-$4 below minimum that should be fixed, but the other numbers here don't support that.
I'm not saying $7.25/h is great but that's all they could sue for, everything else is negotiation and what people are willing to do the work for, it's called a labor MARKET for a reason.

  2. In one of my classes my teacher mentioned that cheerleading is a dangerous sport-there are accidents and injuries all the time. Cheerleading is no joke, and deserve to be paid accordingly.

  3. If your job requires you to undergo regular training and maintenance (in this case, maintaining a certain physical aesthetic) outside of working hours, they need to compensate you for it. – any other industry would do this.

I don't know why anyone would want to work a job that offers flat rate wages like this, as they tend to be a bit dodgy when it comes to workers' rights.

  4. Let's get rid of cheerleaders in pro sports. Its only for basketball and football and I certainly do not go to the games for them. And I never pay any attention to them. I cheer when my team does well, not when these ladies are prompting me to.
If people wanted to see them dance and cheer, wouldn't there be another venue that spotlights them that would sell seats?

  5. The cheerleaders should get paid more if only b/c they have to "cheer" for the Bucks xD JKJK but they should get paid more, Go Pistons!! c:

  6. I would pay these silly "cheerleaders" four times the minimum wage but they will be responsible for all travel expenses and even buying their own tickets to every game! So basically, they would be back to square one; this would avoid any state/federal litigation altogether. Sorry, that's how I roll.

  7. I used to cheer in college and the practices were rough and super early, not to mention you had to be at every game whether rain or snow. Totally not worth it imo!

  8. Some of these professional players get thousands of dollars per basket, and cheerleaders get less than minimum wage. Seems a bit off.

  9. I'm usually of the mind to be like… "don't be a fuckin' cheerleader if you don't like the pay." But shit… $65 a game? That's silly.

  10. $7.25 an hour is a joke, I was getting more than that as a first year apprentice when I was 16 years old. Me and my mate were laughing about how shitty pays once were the other day. It's abysmal that Americans still have to "live" like this.

  11. But it's not a "real" job! They aren't necessary! Well playing ball ain't a "real" job either, but they sure get paid a shit ton more. Is playing ball necessary for society?

It may be just entertainment, but if that entertainment is someone's job and they were hired by the company, they should get paid fairly. Simple.

  12. It's called supply and demand. Nobody goes to a basketball game to watch cheerleaders. If I wanted to do that, I'd go to pornhub

  13. I would like to know if they're getting money for college. I'm on the fence on this one until I know more about all the income or help they're getting. The schools are making soooo much money off of them. I would be more lenient to the schools if the cheerleaders are getting grants or scholarships.

  14. if you're employed, you should be getting paid a fair amount. it doesnt matter what the job is, or if other people think your work is dumb or silly or has no value, when you dedicate time, labor, and effort into something you've been HIRED to do, getting paid is a MUST and not an optional thing.

  15. I thought I saw a reality show where people audition for the role. Maybe the low wages may turn them away, apparently not.

  16. Wow a woman having to get her hair and makeup down at her own cost and not the employer's. Who would have thought. So I assume that Cenk pays to get Ana's hair and makeup done, right?

  17. Okay… then quit and get a real job that actually pays money. Why would you put up with that shitty of pay for more than a weekend?

  18. Just pay them a bit more ffs, it's not like it even matters to the team, compared to the multi million dollar salaries of the players/coaches/GMs.

  19. I'm Australian and we don't have cheerleaders here at all, but having seen the practice from a distance I kind of assumed that the cheerleaders would be very highly paid individuals in the range of, I'm just estimating here, $200,000 a year, considering it's highly demanding, highly skilled and fairly dangerous work.

  20. The sports industrial complex is unbelievable. The college football league profits millions on students who are paid absolutely nothing, many national leagues depend on publicly funded stadiums that end up being owned by private hands, there's very little safety net for the athletes after they retire, and now this bullshit. NBA is the most prestigious basketball league on the planet and they pay ONLY $3.50 an our to their cheerleaders. But this is not just an American problem; the distribution of profits in FIFA clearly indicate that the global sports industry is toxic.

This is simply unacceptable. It's exploitation of labor by an organization that can easily pay these people a fair wage considering the massive revenue they get. The government must intervene, arrest people for abuse, and disband organizations that refuse to follow fair labor conditions.

    Bloody jokers.

  21. They should consider quitting and investing their time more wisely. I'm sure the competition and work is hard as I am an athlete myself.. but if there is no reasonable payout, then leave. If the teams really needed cheerleaders to profit.. then they will pay them more due to the decrease in demand.
Unfortunately a lot of girls out there will sacrifice pay for the title cheerleader and the perks it comes with :/

  22. How were the Bucks able to get around minimum wage laws? Also, is this suppose to be a full time job for them or a part time job? Because it seems to me that either way, the women are not making enough money for a living wage.

  23. That's absolutely ridiculous $65 WOW! That's disgusting people will exploit your dreams and aspirations without the slightest regard. Cheerleading is a competitive sport that takes a lot of skill preparation and dedication. It's way bigger than many individuals think. Thats why we still have it. Do your research.

  24. this is a systemic problem in all sports. The cheerleaders get treated like crap even though they put in more hours then the players themselves and cheerleading actually has the highest risk of injury then even football.

  25. Their stadiums are either fully and partially paid by the tax payers, they make incredible amount of money, but they don't even wanna pay these girls??

  26. They should form a union or something, If a compromise cant be reached they could just walk away and get a job with less glamour and more money.

  27. Cheerleaders are like the ambient music you hear at restaurants. Not a necessity, but adds to the overall experience and fills in the gab when there's silence.

  28. Wow, that is like working at a fast food joint, so much money is made at a game they should be able to make more. The benefit they have is, they have the best seats in the house. 7K a year if you were to buy them and that is on the low side I am sure in LA they are double or more.

  29. Ben, as usual, needs to relax his sphincter a little bit. The Highlight of most pro ball games is the Cheerleaders. Particularly a Bears or Saints game. Those girls are busting their humps for the team and the fans and the scumbags who piss away millions can't even pay them a decent wage? You do know that those Cheerleaders are athletes too and just as dedicated as those fat tub of lard linebackers,( this coming from a fat tub of lard itself).
They could pay these women 40 K a year, each, and still not spend what they spend on clean towels, and pressure bandages.

  30. Meanwhile, the men on the team make millions for playing a children's game while being tall. Congrats on winning the genetic lottery and playing a game that requires a 3rd grade education to fully master. Definitely deserving millionaires. facepalm

  31. Nobody goes to the games because of the cheerleaders. I tired of women complaining about wanting equality, when they really don't it. If women want equality so fuckin' bad, then how come women don't fight for equality when it comes to accountablity in the eyes of the law for such violations like Statichtory Rape?!

  32. this is not a job for the government to come in and tell business what to pay their whores..
these women need to grow some balls and go on strike..

  33. Just waiting for the some Libertarians to come out talking about how the free market this and the free market that….well I support minimum wage laws and think they should be raised by now! At a time most of the giant American and multinational companies are making more money than ever….they should have to pay their workers at least the petty minimum wage rates we have in law as of right now!

  34. Ana, imma be real. You are very attractive person, but I don't look at you that way like some people here
    but today…..GAWD DAMN!

  35. Gut reaction is to bash the cheerleaders, but then you think about how much money the Bucks make, and revenue sharing, and TV and ad deals, and it's impossible to justify how little these women make.

  36. TIPS – They could start collecting tips from the audience if the fat cats in their owner's booth don't pay up.

And yes, I mean with a hat.

  37. the team doesn't even pay for hair&makeup? Come on guys, I know everybody is trying to make an extra buck but making people who make $4 an hour pay for their own hair&makeup when they help make you SO much money? pft. Dicks.

  38. I feel like im not being told the whole story. Any of these girls can EASILY get a job at Hooters that would basically get them to wear the same outfit and make way more then minimum wage.

So if so many choose to stay there instead of going at Hooters, there must be a reason.

  39. It's ridiculous that such a physically demanding job is not even paying minimum wage.  These women are in better shape than many of the athletes.

  40. Anna r u kidding me! Do you know how hard high schoolers have to work to compost at cheer? I can't imagine being a professional cheerleader! I know people who would push themselves so hard that they would get sick. That's at the high school level. Why don't you and 3 of your friends get together and form a mount with 2 biases a back spot and a flyer? Actually don't do that because without proper training and practice you can kill your flyer. Have you ever tried t catch another full grown human bing? Ya it's not as easy as catching a football. So don't judge a sport or those who play it without trying it yourself!!!!!! 😒😠😡😫👿👟🏆

  41. For those of you who think cheerleading is as stupid as pageants think again. Now I have med problems that keep me from becoming a professional cheerleader, but I love the sport. It is a big part of my identity. Do look at cheerleading as a time to gawk a hot chicks. 😖 we see it as a passion. The bonds we make… We trust our lives to or back spots. I know my girls have my back off the track because they have my life on the track. It's an amazing sport. An amazing lifestyle. A wonderful experience.😍

  42. Wait? who created these crazy rules and why haven't they complaint before?
I kinda see why they don't wanna pay them when they practice but is also their fault for even having cheerleaders just pay them all and get rid of them.

  43. Can't wait till the NFL gets hit with similar lawsuits. It's so strange how powerful the NFL is when they are so disreputable. They're like the Mafia if the Mafia owned a day of the week and everybody somehow loves them

  44. It's hard work being a gilded trophy.

But seriously take away a fraction of what the players are being paid and give it to the cheerleaders.

  45. No one is forcing these women to do this job. If there are qualified women who want to do this for nearly free then that is what the job is worth. Go do something else with your life if you want to make more money than these guys are willing to pay. Stop running to the government and asking them to use guns to force people to pay you more money.

  46. Do we know if this is a problem with other teams? With that being asked, I have high regards for the Mil, but this is disgustingly disappointing. Props to the Energee girls for being able to meet those standards on that wage or flat rate I should say. Im a wee bit lazy to do the math, also not knowing the practice schedules of the Energee team or the side event requirements, plus the extras of self preparations… How is it possible to be ready to throw millions at the NBA players and coaches, but not be able to pay the Energee dance team a living wage. Or if they were feeling cheery this time of year, if at all, perhaps a signing bonus even. Actually I figured it out, we should just have the patrons attending the game tip upon entering, and thats after purchasing a ticket for your seat. Then those funds will be divided evenly among the dancers, towel men and women, concession workers, maintenance… You get the idea. Oh no, my brain and hands hurt from writing all that pc nonsense.

  47. opportunistic bitches who are there hoping one day they will get laid and marry one of the superstar who makes the most money
