Once Upon a Campus: A UK Love Story

Lou: “Paul Bryant ’46-’53” “This marker of the old Stoll Fields fifty
yard line has a special significance to UK alumni Ree and Lou Karibou.” Ree: “Every time we go by it he’ll say there
it is.” Lou: “The fifty yard lineÉ”
Ree: “Sometimes I think he’s going to say there it is again but that’s alright I just
let him say there it is again.” “Lou who grew up in Louisville is one of the
few Kentucky football players to say he was recruited by the legendary Bear Bryant.” Lou: “I had never been here, walked in a place
they offer me a scholarship, I said, ‘Yes sir.’ He was such a presence that it’s hard
for me to imagine that you could even refuse it.” “Ree says it’s a good thing Lou didn’t refuse
because the very next year, she arrived on campus.” Ree: “I wanted to come to U of K and I loved
every minute of it.” “Éespecially the part where Ree met Lou at
the student union.” Ree: “In between classes a lot of people would
stop there either eat or get a coke or whatever and that’s where I met him and even though
we’re both from Louisville I don’t think I’d ever heard of FlaggetÉ”
Lou: “I hadn’t heard of Fairdale eitherÉ” Ree: “No you hadn’t. So anyway that’s how
we met, there and had an awful lot of fun.” Lou: “We were in a group, I don’t think it
exists any longer called the Troupers.” Ree: “We did a lot of entertaining together.”
Lou: “She was a dancer and I was a trampoline person.”
Ree: “He made the first move when we were in troopers and he was on the trampoline,
and I get a little smart aleck in me and so I said, “Oh that doesn’t look too tough to
me.” Of course he was just flipping and flipping you know.” “So as Ree cheered on the sidelines of Stoll
Field where Lou played they began to date despite some petty strict rules on campus
at the time.” Ree: “So totally different than today, lots
of curfews. É” Lou: “The women were sequestered on this side
of campus and then the men were mostly sequestered on the other side and you walked every where.”
Ree: “Éand there was no living together in the dorms you know.”
Lou: “We were here too early!” “Despite the curfews Ree and Lou fell in love
and the rest is history.” Ree: “We were married in 1956 and in May it
will be 57 years.” Lou: “It doesn’t sound like long if you say
it fast.” Ree: “It really doesn’t and time just flies
and we’ve enjoyed every minute of it.” “Éand today they just enjoy reliving memoriesÉ” Lou: “I forgot how to do that.” “Éand making some new onesÉ.” Lou: “Look at this wildcat!” “Éon the campus that means so much to both
of them.” Lou: “We really prospered because of U of
K. U of K is a special place.” Ree: “It is a special place.” ######
