Show 9, Oct. 11, 2019 – Panther Sports Talk

It was the 100th homecoming celebration on the UNI campus last weekend. On today’s Panther Sports Talk we recap the football team’s win over previously unbeaten Youngstown State. We mic up a student athlete who mentors kids at volleyball camp, give you an update on the tennis and women’s soccer teams, bring you a story on senior defensive lineman for the football team. And we preview the top 10 matchup at #1 North Dakota State. Panther Sports Talk starts now! The UNI football team had a great homecoming defeating Youngstown State 21-14 and coach Youngstown State was undefeated heading into that game you knew you had a tough test. Talk about how your team responded. I was very pleased of course as we got the win but I thought we were poised. I thought we played with the right kind of desire to win a game like that. And when you get in a tight battle it is going to come down to the end and I thought we kept our composure the whole time and really did a nice job. The importance of starting conference play 1-0. Well, it is critical and any win in this league is a good win and to get off on the right foot we were able to win the game at home and we had a little bit of an advantage that way with the home field advantage but we also knew YSU was a strong, tough, poised team as well being 4-0 they were confident. We saw a slow start at Weber State but definitely not a slow start against YSU with a 21-7 jumping out to that early lead. Well, we needed to do that. We learned a lesson and we came out and we were prepared and the players did a nice job this week displaying that with the result on Saturday. YSU came in as one of the best rushing teams in the nation and you held them to just 55 yards. Talk about how impressive that was. It was impressive. I thought our defensive line played a great football game our coverage was good not great but our front 7 really did a great job against the rush because that is what we focused on that week. As you take a look at individual performers who really stepped up on that offensive side of the football? I think on offense there were multiple but everyone is going to look to Isaiah Weston because over 100 yards receiving and catching the long ball for us and making some big plays but I also saw Trevor Allan running really hard. I saw Jaylin James blocking down field and making some big catches. And Will is distributing the ball equally amongst the receivers. Weston has scored a receiving TD in the last 4 games and the last time a Panther did that was a long time ago. Talk about how he used last year to make himself a better football player. Well, he came back with a hunger for the game and sitting out that game gave him that hunger because sometimes you don’t realize how special the game is and how quickly it can leave so I think he recognized that. He put time to good use and he has really come back a great player. What do you love about that running back combination of Hoosman and Allan? I really like what they are doing because you need to play multiple people there to get the type of back you want every down and Hoosman hit that big run on a 3rd and run for us up the middle and Trevor consistently throughout the game really stood out. It is one thing to get that early lead but it is also tough to hold on for the win. Why was that so important in that 4th quarter. Well, you go back to that last drive it was 15 plays and number 1 it is hard to put 15 plays together without making an error and the same time it is hard to sustain what you are doing on defense to have the patience and poise and to hit another gear to make a big play and the defense made a huge play getting that fumble. Panthers led starts to finish and they are undefeated in conference play as they get ready to take on number 1 North Dakota State. We will talk more with coach Farley right after this. The UNI Volleyball team is undefeated to open Missouri Valley Conference play and sitting in first place with a 5 and 0 record. Middle Hitter Kate Busswitz is averaging 2.83 kills per set, firing a strong 243 attack percentage, and ranks 2nd on the team in blocks. This Summer we mic’d up this Junior from Cedar Rapids as she shared her volleyball knowledge with a younger generation at Panther Volleyball camp. Hands on our hips. Finger on our lip. Do you guys do that still at school? No. Ok. I’m kidding. Ok. We are going to move on and do more of a passing progression so everyone know what passing is? No. Show me what ready position is. Now show me your hands. So you want to rock, paper, no scissors. Wrap it together. I shouldn’t be able to push your arms down alright? Should be super strong. Oh yeah. We are ready. Oh! Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. You guys are super strong. Can anyone show me what a serving hand should look like? The hand. With your serving hand I want you to hit the ball. I want you to hit that ball as hard as you can. Make that face. Hear this! Oh my gosh but you have to do the face for it to be harder though. She had a good face. Keep smacking it. Your hand should be red. Not punching it. We are hitting it. Go to that far wall. Run, run, run. Got it. Go at it. Go nuts. You can’t hurt the wall. Here I have another challenge. Who wants it? Who wants the challenge? Me! Ok, stay where you are but this time you want to do a demo group? Ok roll the ball over here the person in the middle. You are going to be my roller, you are going to be my demo. You are going to roll the ball. Here I will demo it with my long legs. Alright you are going to roll the ball and you are going to stop it with your butt. Oh my gosh that is so funny so you have to stop the ball with your butt. Do you think you guys can do it? You think you can do it all serious or are you going to be giggling the whole time? Alright, let’s see it. Squat. Squat. Squat sit on it! You have to be quicker than that! We are booty stopping. Oh yeah, she is a good booty stopper. This is my giggle group over here isn’t it. You guys haven’t gotten anything done you are just giggling the entire time. She is just giggling through her missing teeth – right through the hole in her mouth. That is the end. 3 people find 3 people give them a high five and tell them good job. Nobody wants to tell me good job? Good job. Anybody? Leaving me hanging here. Good job. Even higher. Nice! Nice! Come on! Nice! The Panther Volleyball team hosts Illinois State at 5pm on October 12th and in-state rival Drake at 6pm on October 18th. Come on out and support Kate and her teammates as they look to defend their conference title. We switch gears now and get an update on the women’s soccer program with head coach Bruce Erickson. It was announced this week the UNI women’s soccer program received the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award for finishing the year with a cumulative GPA of 3.38. On the field the Panthers are searching for their first conference win as they host Indiana State October 12th. Well I think we need to come out and get off to a good start. Scoring first and scoring early your opportunity to win is much more significant when you score first. And I think our record when scoring first has been pretty good. So we need to get 3 points that is how we are approaching it all week and we need to be better at home then we were in our last home game. Every game now is its own championship so we can’t look beyond Saturday because the following week is where we add a 2nd game and play a mid-week game so you want to get a good win on the weekend and prepare for 2 tough ones after that. The final regular season home game is October 26th against Evansville. Still to come on this edition of Panther Sports Talk…we recap the MVC Individual Tennis Championships, bring you a story on a big-time defensive player for the football team, and we preview the top 10 road matchup with Coach Farley.
