The Pensioner Cheerleaders High Kicking Into Retirement

GRETA PAULSEN: I never in my wildest imagination ever thought I would be performing with a
group like this. RUTH PHARRIS: The first I had ever heard of the Sun City Poms was about 10 years ago and
I was watching the fiesta bowl parade on TV and this group came on marching with their
glittery costumes and their arms going every which way, and doing their routines and I
thought “Holy cow! I’ll never be able to do what they do.” COMM: These impressive women form the infamous
Sun City Poms — a marching and performance group for the over 55s. LADY: I have someone’s pom. Someone is going to be missing a gold pom. GRETA PAULSEN: We do, generally do about forty performances a year, as it ranges from 56-84;
average age of little over 70. LADY: There goes all my make-up. GLORIA TOLLA: What inspired me to join this? My love for dancing. I was diagnosed with
severe osteoarthritis when I was in my 20s and they told me I’d be crippled by the time I was in my 40s. So, all my life I’ve pushed myself by exercising, finding things
to do, dancing was one of them. I had had both hips done just within a year before I
started the Sun City Poms. My first practice, I thought, I was going to die. The practices
are quite gruelling, especially our choreographer. RUTH PHARRIS: Just stop where you are, let’s see
your positions, all right? So, five, six, seven, eight.. one and two, three and four,
five, six, seven, eight. Okay stop. RUTH PHARRIS: I probably have lost 15 pounds; my waist declined because I was doing so much
more activity that I had never ever done before. Not only does it help the physical well being
but the mental as well. GLORIA TOLLA: It gives me a chance to express myself. Since I’ve retired I’ve been looking
for something to do and this is my little niche that I found. It makes me feel young again. RUTH PHARRIS: The crowds, it’s awesome. They are so in awe that we do what we do. They
are just amazed that their grandmother is basically getting out there on the dance floor
in our little sequin costumes. GLORIA TOLLA: People come up to me, ‘Oh can I have your autograph?’ Of course, they’re
teasing me but it’s been fun. GLORIA TOLLA: I’m a retired nurse. So, I think everybody needs to exercise no matter
what age. RUTH PHARRIS: Being a Sun City Pom has given me so much confidence that I didn’t have
before. GRETA PAULSEN: Oh, I love to perform. I just love to see people’s faces and their reactions.
I feel a fulfilment and I feel such contentment that I’m able to, to do this.

  11. This is awesome. It's time for us to redefine what elderly looks like by taking care of ourselves and staying who we were in terms of energy and spirit as we are before old age hits. The reason old age is looked down apon is largely due to the image it has. Old ladies with short grey hair, and long ankle dresses and out of shape. Well if we start young, taking care of ourselves, staying a nice size, exercising all our muscles and that includes in the face, and taking collagen regularly. And oh keeping our hair young, we should look more youthful at 70 than our parents will and our grandparents. Actually I wouldn't have a 70 year old grandparent yet. My grandparents are in their early 60s

  12. Done and that's not fair how they are such good dancers they are better than I am and the are In there 70 that's amazing

  13. That's dance not cheer like look up all star cheer and then see the difference but it's still AMAZING that they can dance like that!
